Smith Global Awareness Week 2023
This week the Smith Elementary Community participated in a Global Awareness Week. Throughout the week students, teachers, families and community members engaged in global experiences at our school. To start the week off students and teachers were able to mark their spot on an interactive global map in the foyer and look at global artifacts on the surrounding tables. PTO representatives were available to guide classes through this meaningful experience Monday through Thursday.
On Tuesday, students enjoyed a global performance from The Indigo Bollywood Dance Academy in Morrisville, NC. The dancers shared about India, their traditional attire and taught students a traditional bollywood dance called Naacho, Naacho.
On Wednesday, the PTO organized a Multicultural Night in collaboration with Elon University World Language Professors. Every professor set up a table representing the country that they were from. As Smith families toured the tables they were able to taste traditional food from different places, have their names written in different languages, play games, hold artifacts and engage in global conversations. During the multicultural night 1st grade students performed a song and dance from Asia and 3rd grade students performed songs and dances from Africa. During these performances families were invited to join their students to play instruments and dance. When families were not engaging with the global tables or watching the music performances they were walking our hallways to see the beautiful student global learning displays and artwork. What an amazing night for our community.
On Thursday, we wrapped up our global awareness week with a Global Parade. Students and teachers dressed in Cultural attire that represented the country they were from and paraded the hallways accompanied by global music. All students lined the hallways to watch the Global Parade and cheered as students passed by.
We are proud to be a Global School and to celebrate all of the cultures represented within our building. This week is a wonderful representation of the amazing global things going on in our school year around. Our students and teachers are truly GLOBAL LEADERS.
