Husky Families,

I hope you had a warm and safe weekend! The snow provided a beautiful backdrop for some winter fun, and I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy it while staying safe. I want to thank you for your flexibility and understanding with the schedule changes last week due to the weather. Your patience and cooperation are truly appreciated as we navigate these unexpected adjustments together.

This is the final week of the second quarter. Please take a moment to log into PowerSchool to review grades and have meaningful conversations with your student about any outstanding assignments that need to be completed. Please remind your student to check with their teachers to confirm the final day for submitting assignments for this grading period.

We have several important updates and reminders to keep everyone on track, so please take a moment to review the information below.

PowerSchool App: In order to stay up to date with your student’s grades and attendance, please ensure that you have downloaded the PowerSchool Parent Portal App. You can do this by downloading the PowerSchool app on your phone or device. HERE is all the information you need to download the app and set up its features. If you have any questions, please email Christy Lyle, our PowerSchool Data Manager.

Canvas Observer Account: Parents can sign up as an observer in Canvas. Observers can link their Canvas account to their student’s account so they can see assignment due dates, announcements, and other course contect. Observers can view the course but cannot participate in the course. Follow the steps in this document to sign up as a Parent Observer in your student’s canvas courses.

2025 Student Writing Contest: For almost 70 years, the Burlington Writers Club has sponsored an annual student writing contest. They are a dedicated group of local writers, many of whom found that initial spark at a young age.

At-a-glance contest Guidelines:

  • Deadline for grades 3-8: January 31, 2025

  • Mail entries anytime between now and the deadline

  • Mailing Address: 213 S. Main St., Graham, NC 27253

  • Grades 3-12

  • Categories: Fiction and Poetry

We would love for our talented HMS students to participate in this year’s contest. For full submission guidelines visit https://burlingtonwritersclub.org/contests/student-contest/

Free & Reduced Lunch Application: Breakfast and lunch are not universally free for all students. If you would like your child to eat meals at school, you will either need to put money on their online account or you will need to secure a free/reduced lunch status by filling out the required form. The form is available in the HMS main office or you can fill it out online: https://www.lunchapplication.com/ More information is available here. This year, we are asking that all families complete and return the form, regardless of whether your student will eat a meal at school.

All For Lunch Program: We are excited to share that Hawfields is participating in the All For Lunch program, which helps ensure that every student has access to nutritious meals, regardless of their ability to pay. This incredible initiative is designed to eliminate lunch debt and provide all students with the opportunity to enjoy a healthy meal. You can learn more and support this important cause by visiting All For Lunch at Hawfields Middle School. Let’s work together to make sure no student goes without lunch!
