Husky Families,

It is hard to believe that we are just two weeks away from the end of the first quarter! This is a great time to log into PowerSchool and check your child’s grades. We encourage you to have conversations with your student about any outstanding assignments that need to be completed and submitted before the grading period ends.

Students should also check with their teachers to confirm the last day they can turn in any work for this grading period. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in ensuring all assignments are submitted on time.

As always, we have several important updates and reminders to keep everyone on track, so please take a moment to review the information below. Let’s make this week a fantastic one!

Cross Country Championship: The Middle School Cross Country Championship will take place on Monday, October 14, at Cedar Rock Park, with the meet starting at 5:00 PM. Come out and support our amazing runners as they compete for the championship! Your encouragement and support mean so much to our athletes. Go Huskies!

Sprayground Tags and Nike Elite Zippers: Recently, there have been reports of students removing Sprayground tags and Nike Elite zippers from their classmates' backpacks. As a reminder, Rule 21 of the ABSS Student Code of Conduct states that students should not steal, attempt to steal, or knowingly be in possession of stolen property. Consequences for violations can include Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) for up to 10 days and restitution, if appropriate. Please talk with your student about the importance of respecting others' belongings and remind them that they should not be taking any item from someone else’s backpack. Your support in reinforcing this message at home is greatly appreciated.

ABSS Family University: Family University is this Monday, October 14th from 5:30-7:30 pm at Cummings High School. There are many wonderful sessions being offered to parents that will assist you in supporting your child.  Childcare for Pre-K to 5th grade and is also available! This is a great opportunity to learn more about how ABSS can support you and how you can support your student(s). We hope to see you there!

Attendance: Hawfields Middle School is committed to engaging students in challenging learning opportunities that are matched to individual needs. In order to allow our teachers and staff to support students in this way, it is imperative that every student attend school regularly. Our overall average attendance rate last week was 95.2%, with the 6th grade class having the highest attendance at 96.8%! Thank you for helping us keep our weekly attendance at 95% or higher!

Reproductive Health Consent Forms: Please log into PowerSchool to complete the Reproductive Health Consent or Withhold Consent for Student Participation form for your student. This is a new form, and even if you have already submitted other back-to-school forms, we still need your input on this specific matter. Your prompt attention and assistance are greatly appreciated as we ensure all necessary documentation is in place for the school year.

Free & Reduced Lunch Application: Breakfast and lunch are not universally free for all students. If you would like your child to eat meals at school, you will either need to put money on their online account or you will need to secure a free/reduced lunch status by filling out the required form. The form is available in the HMS main office or you can fill it out online: https://www.lunchapplication.com/ More information is available here. This year, we are asking that all families complete and return the form, regardless of whether your student will eat a meal at school.

School Dance: Our first school dance of the year will be on Friday, October 25th, from 4:00 to 6:30 PM! Tickets will cost $5, and concessions will be available for purchase.

Please be reminded of the following guidelines:

  • Students who owe money to cafeteria accounts, technology fees, or have other outstanding balances to Hawfields Middle School will not be allowed to attend school functions that charge a fee or purchase items sold by the school. All lunch debt must be paid in order for students to attend the dance.

  • Students will lose the privilege of attending or participating in extracurricular activities (e.g. clubs, dances, sports, etc.) if they accumulate six (6) strikes in one quarter. Strikes will be given at the following rate: In-School Suspension (ISS): 2 strikes; Out-of-School Suspension (OSS): 3 strikes.

More information will be coming next week. We look forward to a fun and safe event with our students!

8th Grade Career Development Plans: In accordance with new state regulations beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, all 8th grade students will engage in career exploration activities and develop a preliminary Career Development Plan. The attached letter which provides more details about this new initiative will go home with 8th graders next week.

Athletics: Please note that paper copies of sports physicals will no longer be accepted. All sports physical paperwork must be uploaded to DragonFly. Instructions on how to set up a DragonFly account can be found on our school website under the Sports section. If you need assistance or have any questions, please feel free to contact Coach Marsh at lavar_marsh@abss.k12.nc.us.
