North Carolina Senator Amy Galey toured Hugh M. Cummings High School today to announce funds in the latest North Carolina budget for two athletic facility projects in Alamance-Burlington Schools. Of the funds, $688,000 will be used to replace the 20 year old track at Cummings High School and $250,000 will go toward replacing the concession stand and press box at Eastern High School.
“While working on the state budget this year, I looked at my district and saw a need to use funding to help our children. Student athletes deserve adequate facilities. Participation in sports is closely linked to success in school and beyond. Knowing the condition of the Cummings track, I wanted to address a pressing need. I’m a firm believer that students find security and stability in sports,” said Galey, “and, after all our students have been through in the past two years, they deserve our attention and support.”
Construction is expected to begin in late spring 2023 following the formal design and bidding stages.
Coach Donald Davis, Sr. who led the Cummings Boy’s Track team to 2A State Championship victory this year called it a much needed upgrade.
“Coach Davis is amazing with our student athletes and sets the bar high for each of them which in turn makes them better students. This will be a significant improvement. We are grateful,” said LaTasha Fonville, Cummings High School Principal.
The concession stand at Eastern High was beyond repair and was not used last school year. A temporary solution will be used until the new one is constructed later this year.
