ABSS Superintendent Dr. Dain Butler and Deputy Superintendent Lowell Rogers honored the District’s top two administrators for the year.
Hawfields Middle School Principal Greg Hook was named the ABSS Principal of the Year. Hook, who is in his 25th year in education, started as a classroom teacher at Williams High School. He has served the past 10 years at Hawfields as Principal.
“I'm fortunate to be surrounded by a professional staff that remains focused on creating challenging learning opportunities to match individual student needs so that students can reach their maximum academic potential. The real accolades for my achievement belong to the staff at Hawfields Middle School,” said Hook.
Hawfields Middle ranked third out of all schools in North Carolina with regards to the academic growth index which is a testament to Hook’s leadership. This is the third time in a row that HMS has been in the top four in the state for academic growth.

Longtime educator Tameka Cloud was named the 2022 ABSS Assistant Principal of the Year. Cloud is in her 27th year with ABSS and has served the past nine years as Assistant Principal of Eastlawn Elementary.
“It is such an honor to work with my Eastlawn family each day. I’m driven by the students and staff who show up every day and work hard to accomplish the goals we have set. It is rewarding to see our students graduate from high school, come back to visit, and let me know their memories of Eastlawn. I am grateful to be named ABSS Assistant Principal of the Year and for the professional relationships I have formed within the district,” said Cloud.
Each school year, the Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year are nominated by District staff and voted on by Central Service Administration. Hook will go on to represent the District as part of the North Carolina Principal of the Year program.
