Alexander Wilson Elementary School was recently honored as a Participate Learning Global Leaders Showcase school, a prestigious designation that recognizes schools cultivating students as global leaders.
On Wednesday, the entire school community gathered to celebrate this achievement. All 3rd-5th grade students attended the banner reveal and recognition ceremony for their new Showcase status.
Afterwards, every K-5 Spanish Immersion class took the stage to showcase what global learning looks like at Alexander Wilson. Students performed cultural songs, plays, and presentations from their teachers' home countries, demonstrating impressive Spanish proficiency at every grade level.
The 5th graders particularly exemplified the global competencies, presenting an entire class project—originally created in Spanish—flawlessly in English. Their poise and skill in communicating across languages was impressive to watch.
"We're so proud of our students for embodying what it means to be globally competent leaders and learners," said Principal Ashley Westmoreland. "Our theme is 'Together, we can change the world.' This recognition celebrates how our school engages students in understanding global issues, thinking critically, communicating across cultures, and taking action to improve our world."
The Global Learners Showcase honors schools cultivating attitudes, skills and knowledge across ten core competencies including critical thinking, communication, understanding global issues and intercultural understanding. By developing these competencies, learners feel empowered to understand the world, feel connected to it, and take action to make it better.
With its robust Dual Language Spanish Immersion program across all grades, Alexander Wilson Elementary is clearly equipping the next generation of global leaders and citizens.
