After 29 dedicated years with ABSS, Dawn Madren is retiring as the Director of Human and New Talent. Dawn was a trailblazer as part of the first graduating class of Elon University's Teaching Fellows program. She taught for 8 years at AO Elementary before interning with Dr. Jean Maness at Andrews Elementary, then becoming an assistant principal at Southern Alamance in 2002. After 4 years as assistant principal and 5.5 more as principal at Southern, Dawn moved to ABSS Central Office in 2012, where she has served in Human Resources, most recently as Director of Human and New Talent. We congratulate Dawn on an impactful career with ABSS and wish her happy travels seeing the country in her RV, starting in late January! Her leadership and commitment to our students and staff will be missed. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement, Dawn!

The staff at Ray Street Academy showed up in style and brought the energy for their Spirit Week, featuring PJ, Senior, Meme, and Decade Days! Can you identify the time periods for Decade Day (#1)? For our social-media pros, do you recognize the memes for Meme Day (#2)? Take a look! 👀

Alexander Wilson Elementary closed out Native American Heritage Month with a wonderful celebration of indigenous culture. 🧡 Josiah "Three Feathers," 🪶a student at Williams High School and part of the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, and his close friend Ms. Julia "Eagle," 🦅 of the Cheroenhaka Nottoway Tribe, demonstrated traditional dances and displayed beautiful handmade items. Our youngest Pre-K eagles were thrilled to learn about the history and traditions of North Carolina's first people. We are so grateful to them for taking the time to visit and share their knowledge during this special month. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #StudentCenteredFuturefocused #ABSSCommunity

First graders at Elon Elementary went on a global "field trip" to South Africa today! 🇿🇦
🛫 Students boarded a pretend flight with Capt. Principal Dr. Davern as their pilot. He kept the plane steady as they enjoyed in-flight snacks and facepaint before "landing" and heading out on a safari at Kruger National Park, where they learned about local wildlife!
🛍️ After traveling to some other destinations, they sampled local treats and visited a "gift shop" with some cool souvenirs!
✨ This memorable trip was made possible by our wonderful Participate Learning teacher Mrs. Haripershad, and other school staff, who helped plan and add to the experience.
📚 Now students are creating a picture book about what they learned. An unforgettable educational adventure!

We love sharing student showcases! 🎤 We're proud of the first-grade students at AO Elementary who participated in their monthly Poetry Cafe this week. The young poets each selected a poem to practice at home before presenting to their classmates, building valuable public speaking and self-confidence skills. For this month's Cafe, parents were invited to see their children share their work. Watching the students' excitement as they recite their poems is a highlight for both the students and staff. Events like Poetry Cafe allow students to showcase their talents while covering speaking standards in an engaging way. Kudos to the students and staff at AO Elementary for fostering creativity and self-expression! 👏 #StudentCenteredFutureFocused #ABSSCommunity

Hello, #ABSSCommunity! Just a reminder that when you see those bright yellow buses, be sure to STOP🛑 and let our kids on and off safely. Passing a stopped school bus is illegal and dangerous! Student safety is our top priority. Let's look out for each other and our children. 🚌
