A dedicated educator with deep roots in Alamance County will now help shape the future of elementary education across the district. Dr. Julie Turner, a Williams High School graduate who has served the Alamance-Burlington School System for nearly three decades, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of Elementary Education.
Dr. Turner's educational journey exemplifies her commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth. She holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, completed in December 2021, adding to her impressive array of credentials including a Superintendent License and extensive experience in school administration.
"Leadership is not about being in charge but taking care of those in my charge," shares Dr. Turner, quoting Simon Sinek to express her leadership philosophy. "I believe true leadership is not about a position, but rather about actively supporting and guiding, and taking care of those within our team and organization. In this role, I look forward to partnering with the elementary principals to support the great work they are doing and helping ABSS continue to make positive gains in student achievement."
Dr. Turner's career in education spans nearly three decades, with significant experience at various levels within ABSS. Most recently, she served as Principal of Turrentine Middle School, following twelve successful years as Principal of Smith Elementary. Her leadership excellence has been repeatedly recognized, including being named ABSS Principal of the Year in both 2013-2014 and 2022-2023, and achieving distinction as a 2023 Semi-finalist for North Carolina Principal of the Year for the Piedmont Triad Region.
"Coming full circle to serve in the schools where I grew up has been particularly meaningful," Dr. Turner reflects. "I am invested in this community, and I'm excited to serve at the district level for ABSS since this is home for me."
Throughout her career, Dr. Turner has demonstrated a commitment to continuous growth and embracing new challenges. This is evidenced by her completion of her doctorate, her successful transition to middle school leadership, and now her advancement to this district-level position. Her experience includes roles as a kindergarten teacher, curriculum lead teacher, assistant principal, and principal, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of elementary education from multiple perspectives.
Under her leadership, her schools have received numerous accolades, including recognition as a Capturing Kids' Hearts National Showcase School and designation as a Piedmont Triad Education Consortium Signature School. Dr. Turner has also served as a mentor for new principals and has been actively involved in professional development, regularly presenting on topics such as "Growing Your School Culture" at North Carolina State University.
In her new role as Executive Director of Elementary Education, Dr. Turner will leverage her extensive experience and deep commitment to education to support and enhance elementary education across the Alamance-Burlington School System.
