The Alamance-Burlington School System Board of Education announces the appointment of Tony Messer as its new Chief Finance Officer. The Board of Education approved this appointment during their meeting on August 26.

Professional Background and Leadership

Tony Messer previously served as Chief Financial Officer for the Chatham County Board of Education in Pittsboro, North Carolina. He has held leadership positions in professional organizations, including two terms as President of the North Carolina Association of School Business Officials and as President of the Southeastern Association of School Business Officials, overseeing 12 states. Mr. Messer currently serves on the board of two non-profit organizations focused on youth in surrounding communities.

Education and Certifications

Mr. Messer holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Science in Accounting from East Carolina University. He has also earned the SFO (Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations) certification from the Association of School Business Officials (ABSCO) International. Notably, Mr. Messer is one of only two North Carolina Finance Officers with this certification.

Professional Experience

His professional experience includes 12 years as a public accountant, specializing in banking and governmental audits. He also has 12 years of extensive experience in school district financial operations and has been involved in producing Comprehensive Annual Reports for school districts.

Recognition and Achievements

Throughout his career, Mr. Messer has received professional recognition, including the 2024 Lou Thompson Award from the North Carolina Association of School Business Officials. He has been recognized at state, national, and international levels for his work in school district financial operations.
