On Monday, July 29, the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education approved Dr. Aaron Fleming as the next superintendent for the Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS).

His professional career began as an agricultural education teacher and Future Farmers of America advisor in Cabarrus and Johnston counties. He continued to work in career and technical education as a director in Wilkes and Lee counties before working in education policy as an advisor to the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Dr. Fleming has served as the Superintendent in Harnett County since his appointment in 2017. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural education from North Carolina State University, a master of school administration from Appalachian State University, and a doctorate in education leadership from Wingate University.

Dr. Fleming was named the 2021 and 2022 Sandhills Regional Superintendent of the Year and is the first-ever Superintendent in the Sandhills region to be presented with the honor for two consecutive years. He currently serves as a trustee for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), a member of the North Carolina Professional Educator Preparation and Standards Commission, a past president of the North Carolina Association for Career and Technical Education Administrators, and a former board member for the North Carolina Association of School Administrators.

Board of Education chairwoman Sandy Ellington-Graves highlighted Dr. Fleming’s advocacy for staff, students, and community, along with his focus on quality education, and increasing opportunities for all students as key points resonating with the board during the interview process. “It is exciting to welcome Dr. Fleming to Alamance County as the leader of ABSS,” commented Board Chair Sandy Ellington-Graves. “With his experience in curriculum development, policy, finance, and digital learning, we are confident his leadership will move our district forward.”

Dr. Fleming shared his excitement for the opportunity to lead ABSS: “I am excited and honored to begin this role with the Alamance-Burlington School System. I have heard a great deal about this community and its legacy of excellence in educating children. I am looking forward to being a part of the ABSS team.” He continued, “I appreciate the hours of work the board of education has invested in the search for a new leader. I am eager to meet with members of our ABSS staff, families, and community as we continue to prioritize student success in Alamance-Burlington Schools.”

Following the Board of Education announcement in a special-called meeting, district staff and community leaders welcomed Dr. Fleming with a reception provided by the Alamance Chamber.
