The Alamance County Commissioners approved the use of an additional $5 million to address mold remediation needs in several ABSS schools. Of this amount, $4 million will come from the school District’s capital reserves and $1 million from lottery funds.
The additional funding will go towards mold remediation efforts at Eastlawn Elementary, Haw River Elementary, Southern Middle School, Sylvan Elementary, Western High School, and Western Middle School. The total cost to fully remediate mold issues across all ABSS facilities is estimated at $20 million. That amount does not include additional HVAC upgrades, roof repairs, and structural issues that will need to be addressed.
Both Boards plan to continue discussion around these additional costs on Friday at 3 p.m. at Central Services.
To date, assessments have been completed at 22 ABSS schools with 17 identified as having mold issues. An additional seven schools are undergoing walk through evaluations. Over the remainder of this week, assessments will be conducted at eight more school sites as well as Central Services.
The following schools are impacted:
- Alexander Wilson Elementary
- Broadview Middle
- Cummings High
- E.M. Holt Elementary
