Alamance-Burlington Schools (ABSS) announced today that mold has been discovered on surfaces at nine additional schools across the district. The affected schools are:
- Western High
- Western Middle
- Haw River Elementary
- Eastlawn Elementary
- Southern Middle
- Sylvan Elementary
- Garrett Elementary
- South Mebane Elementary
- Eastern High School
According to environmental inspectors ESG and LRC, the mold is not toxigenic or black mold. However, remediation has been recommended at all sites. ABSS is awaiting full air sampling results for these locations.
Staff at those schools will be temporarily relocated to the following locations. Families needing support can also reach out to administrators and staff at these locations.
Western High staff working at Elon Elementary
Western Middle staff working at AO Elementary
Haw River Elementary staff working at CTEC
Eastlawn staff working at Andrews Elementary
Southern Middle staff working at Southern High
Sylvan Elementary staff working at B. Everett Jordan Elementary
Garrett Elementary staff working at Hawfields Middle School
South Mebane staff working at Southeast Alamance High School
Eastern High School staff working at Woodlawn Middle School
ABSS contracted on Monday with Raleigh-based Builder Services of NC, a commercial mold remediation company, to complete the necessary remediation work. Crews of over 700 workers arrived early Tuesday morning to begin mold removal and repairs at Cummings High School, Broadview Middle School, and Williams High School.
Once the work is completed, the District will have spent $1.2 million on mold remediation and repairs at Andrews and Newlin Elementary Schools, and $3.5 million on remediation efforts at Cummings High, Broadview Middle, and Williams High. The District is still working to determine cost estimates for necessary mold repairs at the nine new campuses that have been affected.
“I want our families to know that we are working tirelessly to get our students back in these buildings on September 5. That continues to be my plan! I’m sorry we had to delay school by a week but greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve this challenge and continue to do what’s best for our students and staff,” said Dr. Dain Butler, Superintendent.
The ABSS Board of Education, Alamance County Commissioners, and the County's state delegation will reconvene their joint meeting on Wednesday, August 30 at 10 AM at ABSS Central Services to discuss funding options for remediation at the nine additional campuses.
