Buses, roll out! 🚌 💨 Our drivers wrapped up their final team meeting before hopping behind the wheel and heading to their campus parking lots, getting everything lined up for the first day of school on Monday!

Behind every ride is a massive team effort. From the mechanics who spent the summer under the hood to the coordinators and directors who spent months analyzing routes, our Transportation team keeps this district moving forward. Come Monday morning, 144 school buses will be rolling out.

You can track your bus by downloading the Here Comes the Bus app or visiting herecomesthebus.com and enter district code 74462 when you sign up. There might be a few minor hiccups early on, but things will smooth out quickly as routes settle. We appreciate your patience! 🙏

Finally, there are still a few openings on some of our routes. If you want to make a real difference, consider driving a bus with us! Classes start in September: https://www.abss.k12.nc.us/page/bus-classes

Watch for our yellow buses (especially those stop arms and flashing lights) and be mindful of our students who may be crossing the road. See you bright and early Monday! 🌅

Throughout the summer, our School Nutrition department provided meals to families with daily and weekly pickup options available. In total, they distributed 67,926 breakfasts, 89,521 lunches, and 16,399 snacks! We're thankful for their hard work preparing these meals each morning, setting up in different sites, and responding to families as they came through. Now they're gearing up to serve students at school and would love for you to join them! This is a great job opportunity for parents who want the same schedule as their school-aged children. Our elementary students spent the month of June diving into the world of books during the ABSS Summer Reading Camp! 📚✨ The program brought energy and literacy support to young readers across the district. This year’s camp embraced the theme "Show Your Colors" and rolled out the brand-new Dragonfly reading curriculum. Thanks to the prep work of our Curriculum Team and Anna Dickens, educators were equipped with the tools to make reading both engaging and impactful.

A major highlight of the camp was the collaboration with the Alamance County Public Libraries. Thanks to their mobile library, 610 registered campers had the opportunity to check out new books on a weekly basis. 🚍 The camp operated across four sites, managed by our Site Coordinators: Heath Ellingworth at Holt Elementary, McKenzie Strickland at Elon Elementary, Jalanda Allen at Andrews Elementary, and Kelly Holloway at Garrett Elementary. Peter Martinek-Jenne served as the Director.

A HUGE thank you to the 40 dedicated staff members who colored our students' summers with the joy of reading! 🎒🎈👏

Summer Reading Camps are wrapping up this week! Summer leadership isn't just for our staff! Alamance Youth Leadership Academy (AYLA) brings together seventh and eighth grader students from Alamance County middle schools for leadership skills development throughout the year. This is a fantastic partnership between Alamance Chamber and Elon University, Center for Leadership. On this day, students were just wrapping up a group project about how they could bring about meaningful change in their schools! Staff from our ABSS Career & Technical Education department also spent the afternoon showcasing various CTE activities available to ABSS students, including agriculture and soil PH, carpentry and trades, food science, public safety, engineering, and more! These activities included the actual materials students may see in these CTE classes, like hammering nails in Carpentry, mending an artificial wound in Public Safety, and rolling ingredients in a ball until it turns to ice cream!

This week, teacher leaders and administrators from every school gathered for our annual Summer Symposium. As you can see in these photos, they engaged in deep, meaningful discussions that drive real school improvement. 📊💡

Walk into any of the rooms and you'd see teams establishing focused, measurable goals aligned with student needs, selecting proven, research-based strategies, and designing a systematic progress monitoring plan to track data in real-time. All of this hard work culminates in an actionable School Improvement Plan built to ensure accountability and progress across every classroom.

Real improvement starts with conversations like these. Thank you to our school leaders for paving the way for an incredible year ahead! 🎒👏

Congratulations to the ABSS Multilingual Learners SIOP Cohort X (our 10th group!) After two years of dedication, hard work, and deep diving into best practices, this amazing group of educators has officially completed their training! You can see a few of them here proudly showing our their completion certificates. They have spent the last two years mastering strategies to better support, uplift, and empower the Multilingual Learners in our classrooms. We are so incredibly proud of their commitment to our students! 📚✨

SIOP stands for Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol. It is a widely recognized, research-based instructional model designed to help teachers effectively teach academic content (like math, science, or history) to Multilingual Learners (MLs) and English language learners, while simultaneously building their language skills. Rather than teaching language entirely separate from school subjects, the SIOP framework guides teachers on how to adjust their delivery so that the lesson remains high-quality and rigorous, but completely accessible to students who are still mastering English.

We're excited to announce that LaSonya Moffett from Williams High School has been named the ABSS School Social Worker of the Year! Ms. Moffett has had a profound impact on the Bulldog community over the past three years thanks to her unwavering commitment to students, families, and staff alike.

Whether she is building meaningful relationships to help students overcome personal barriers, serving on the School Improvement Team, or advocating for resources at the district level, Ms. Moffett is a tireless champion for everyone around her. One of the most impactful examples of her dedication is the food pantry she operates right out of her office. By directly addressing food insecurity, she ensures that students and families have access to basic necessities, which has made a profound difference in many lives.

Principal Curry elaborated on her impact: "What truly sets Ms. Moffett apart is her willingness to do whatever is needed to support others. There is no task too small or too large—she approaches every responsibility with professionalism, care, and a genuine desire to help."

Ms. Moffett truly exemplifies the very best of Student & Family Services, meeting every challenge with a smile and a solution-oriented mindset.
