Alamance-Burlington Schools today provided an update on its ongoing efforts to assess and remediate mold issues discovered at multiple schools in the District. Due to the scope of the project, the District made the decision to delay the start of school until Tuesday, September 5th to allow sufficient time to complete inspections, testing, and develop a priority plan.
To date, remediation work has been completed at Andrews Elementary. Work is currently underway at Newlin Elementary and testing is being conducted at Cummings High School, Broadview Middle, and Williams High School. The concerns inside these buildings are more widespread according to inspectors, warranting the closing of these campuses.
The District has been made aware of possible issues at AO Elementary, Eastlawn Elementary, Grove Park Elementary, South Mebane Elementary, Woodlawn Middle, Western Middle, E.M. Holt Elementary, Garrett Elementary, Highland Elementary, North Graham Elementary, South Graham Elementary, Pleasant Grove Elementary, Turrentine Middle, Graham High, Western High, and Eastern High.
ABSS has contracted with indoor air quality experts to conduct inspections at each school.
The ABSS Board of Education, Alamance County Commissioners, and the County’s state delegation plans to hold a special called joint meeting Monday at 3 p.m. to discuss next steps.
So far, the District has spent over $1.2 million on mold remediation and HVAC repairs at Andrews and Newlin.
“Fixing these issues is going to take resources we don’t have. We hope to develop a plan after Monday's Joint Meeting to determine the best course of action going forward,” said Dr. Dain Butler, Superintendent.
