The Alamance-Burlington School System has discovered mold at a second school, Newlin Elementary. Similar to Andrews Elementary, the source appears to be humidity issues with the HVAC system at Newlin. The problem seems to be isolated to specific rooms, like what was seen at Andrews.
As a precaution, Newlin summer school students and staff have been temporarily relocated to South Graham Elementary while facilities staff assess the issue. Remediation plans are now underway at Newlin, similar to those approved last week for Andrews Elementary.
The ABSS Board of Education approved more than $600,000 last Friday during an emergency meeting for professional mold remediation at Andrews Elementary. More than 50 contractors started work Monday at Andrews. The contract also includes a post remediation verification company to certify the work once it's complete to ensure the building is safe for occupancy.
The District is working diligently to resolve these HVAC and mold problems prior to the new school year. However, contingency plans are being developed in case repairs cannot be completed in time at either school. The top priority is ensuring a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.
Additional updates will be provided as more details become available. The school system appreciates the patience and understanding of both our staff and the families who have been impacted as we work to rectify this situation as quickly as possible.
